Map of the State of Sequoya. Originally prepared for the Sequoyah Statehood Convention of 1905. This is a reprint of a map from 1905 that shows the Proposed State of Sequoyah.Sequoyah represented the eastern region of Oklahoma, once part of Indian Territory. By the 1850s, it was governed by the Five Civilized Tribes. The United States later took control of the western portion, relocating additional tribes. In 1889, white settlers claimed some lands, leading to the creation of the Territory of Oklahoma. Self-governance declined as the U.S. moved towards statehood. Sequoyah, a proposed state, drew its name from the Cherokee leader and inventor of the Cherokee script. Although it never materialized, ideas from its proposed constitution influenced Oklahoma's charter. In 1907, Oklahoma joined the Union, incorporating Indian Territory and retaining county names from Sequoyah's proposal. This print is digitally remastered and professionally reprinted on your choice of either tear proof & water resistant PolyPro paper or thick Artist Canvas using Epson inks. This print ships rolled & unframed in a heavy-gauge mailing tube. Read more
